Fig. 7. Schematic illustration of the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of betaine in EAU-induced rats. EAU was initiated by T cell proliferation induced by IRBP recognition. The IRBP-induced T cells circulated through the vessels and homed in on the eye as a target organ. The infiltration of Iba1-and ED1-positive macrophages was detected in the ciliary body. Inflammatory cell infiltration decreased in the betaine-treated group. Betaine treatment led to the downregulation of the levels of VCAM1, Serpina3n, IL-1β, TNF-α, COX-2, Iba1 and GS and upregulation of CAT, SOD1, SOD2 and SOD3. Moreover, betaine treatment restored the blood SOD concentrations.
